The Henry A. Monday collection, 1522-1935.

Correspondence, legal and financial papers, tax records, contracts, land records, cédulas, reports, official documents, broadsides, circulars, and other papers relating chiefly to various aspects of Mexican political, legal, and ecclesiastical history. Includes records and other papers of the Dominican Order in Puebla as well as other material relating to the Catholic Church, records of the viceregal administration and the Audiencia, a history of the Franciscans in Michoacán, material relating to Indian villages, and miscellaneous material relating to such topics as the Cortés family, languages and paleography, and the Inquisition. Persons figuring prominently in the collection include Francisco de Aguilar, Félix Calleja, Domingo de la Edeza Verástegui, Agustín de Iturbide, Juan de Narváez, Emperor Maximilian, Alvaro Obregon, and Manuel Orozco y Berra.

First emperor of Mexico. Born 1783 in Valladolid (Morelia); executed July 19, 1824, in Padilla, Tamaulipas. Iturbide joined the army in 1800, by 1810 was fighting with the royalists, and by 1820 held the rank of colonel.
